The automated parking system built in the Heenaamaage plot of land in capital city Malé has been left unused for over seven months.

The parking system, which can hold up to 100 motorcycles at a time, was completed and tested for use last September.

Ahmed Fazaal, spokesperson of the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure, answered RaajjeMV’s inquiry as to why the parking system is not use, to say that the press will be informed of ‘of a reason soon’.

The neglect has caused parts of the mechanical system to rust, and the area surrounding it is covered in scrap and refuse.

Heenaamaage is a plot of land owned by the state. The housing ministry earlier said it would build an additional parking system that can hold ten four-wheeled vehicles.

The State Trading Organization was given the project to build 20 automated parking systems in capital city Malé – 10 for two-wheeled vehicles and 10 for four-wheelers.

Just two have thus far been completed - the system in Heenaamaage and another near Velaanaage, a complex holding several ministerial and government offices. The latter system is now in use.
