Former lawmaker and opposition leader Mohamed Nasheed’s political adviser, Abdulla Jabir has been granted asylum by the British government.
Maldives’ ex-Attorney General Dhiyana Saeed, also Jabir’s wife, reported as such in a tweet she sent out on Tuesday in which she also thanked Nasheed for his ‘assistance’.
Congrats to @chairmanjabir on being granted asylum. I'm glad the wait is over & that safety has been assured.

Jabir has long been a resident in the United Kingdom, and in June last year the Maldivian government imposed a travel ban on him causing him to be denied immediate entry after a trip to Italy.
British customs officials allowed him in after a 15-hour wait at the Gatwick Airport. Dhiyana had denounced the travel ban as having no legal basis and an intimidation attempt.
In October last year, the Civil Court ordered his company Yacht Tours to pay a sum of USD 3.6 million, as outstanding payments for the company’s lease on sandbanks Beenafushi and Kandaali Finolhu.
