Lawyer criticizes Attorney General over rights issues

She also said that officials in his position should be able to raise concerns over legal issues including the declaration of the state of emergency

Lawyer Maryam Shunana has criticized Attorney General Mohamed Anil for remaining silent while the rights of citizens are being taken away.

Shunana said this in RaajjeTV’s Falasurukhee programme.

She noted that the attorney general was well-versed in human rights issues, and that he and President Office’s legal affairs minister Azima Shakoor are both experts in the legal sector.

While the attorney general has worked for the rights of individuals, Shunana expressed concern on what pressured him to remain silent on the anti-defection act and the state of emergency decree.

She also said that officials in his position should be able to raise concerns over legal issues including the declaration of the state of emergency.

Shunana had spoken out after the government extended the state of emergency and called for its revocation. After 10 years of working at the Attorney General’s office, she resigned on March 29.

Shunana said she would speak out again against unconstitutional conduct and will remain steadfast in supporting the reform effort.
