Supreme Court will be deciding on revoking the recent amendment to the Judges Act on Thursday, 1pm.
The case was filed by members of the Joint Opposition parties to revoke the amendment that allows the dismissal of any judge who is convicted of criminal charges.
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Kendhoo MP Ali Hussain, and Makunudhoo MP Ana Naeem filed the case on behalf of the Joint Opposition, but it has been two weeks since the hearings concluded.
The Joint Opposition noted that the Constitution already dictates how a judge can be dismissed.
Pro-government MPs proposed and passed the amendment after Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed were arrested for allegedly attempting to overthrow the government, after the Supreme Court ordered the release of political prisoners and reinstatement of opposition MPs on February 1.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has also recently suspended Justice Saeed and Hameed without pay according to the amendment.
