Maldives Police Service has revealed that Hinnavaru MP and opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Parliamentary Group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was arrested under the State of Emergency.

Solih's lawyer Hisaan Hussain has confirmed this to RaajjeTV.

The MP was arrested near the Republic Square at the mass anti-government rally held on Friday, where protesters poured onto the streets of the capital city to call for the resignation of President Yameen.

At the rally police arrested MP Solih without stating a reason.

His family had approached the police with a medicine he needs for a permanent illness on a daily basis, they had expressed their discontent when it had not reached Ibrahim even after 12 hours.

While Solih is a long-standing parliment member, he is also a prominent leader of the Joint Opposition parties.

He remains in Dhoonidhoo detention center since his arrest on Friday night.

Friday's mass anti-government rally saw a large number of protesters, resilient in their reform efforts to end an autocratic rule even though police had used a copious amount of pepper-spray and excessive force to disperse the crowds, later having resorted to firing tear gas at protestors.

Some arrested at Friday's rally include RaajjeTV's reporters Mohamed Fazeen and Mohamed Wisam, Head of Programmes Amir Saleem, MDP's deputy Parliamentary Group leader MP Ali Azim, Jumhooree Party MP Hussain Mohamed, several women and opposition party officials.

The total number of arrested individuals reaches 141, and 139 remained in police custody on Saturday. Out of those arrested at Saturday’s rally, 15 remain in police custody, one woman and 14 men.
