MP Abdulla Riyaz, the deputy leader of the opposition Jumhoree Party, has been accused of conspiring to overthrow the government.

Riyaz was arrested at a demonstration, held by the allied opposition parties calling for President Abdulla Yameen's resignation, March 2 under the ongoing state of emergency. 

He was questioned 12 days after being in police custody, and the parliamentarian has denied the allegations.

His lawyer cited Riyaz as saying that citizens have the right to rally against President Y

Yameen's unlawful government, and that the police service allows protests to continue until 10:30pm.

North Henveiru MP Abdulla Shahid was also arrested alongside Riyaz. He is being charged with police obstruction.
