EC to not obey Supreme Court order to reinstate 12 MPs
The Supreme Court ruling nullified EC’s own ruling last year to remove the 12 MPs for violating a floor-crossing ban
The commission also said that it has not decided on when to hold the by-election

Elections Commission (EC) has said it has not decided to obey the Supreme Court ruling on February 1 to reinstate 12 opposition MPs.

The Supreme Court ruling nullified EC’s own ruling last year to remove the 12 MPs for violating a floor-crossing ban.

Ahmed Shareef, the managing director of utility company Fenaka, was appointed as President of EC on Tuesday, on the same day he was sworn in as a member.

At a press conference held after his appointment, EC said it will obey the orders of the Supreme Court, but that the court has made a later ruling on February 18, calling on authorities to postpone implementing its order to reinstate the MPs.

EC said it does not wish to talk about the 12 opposition MPs as Attorney General Mohamed Anil has a case regarding them at the Supreme Court. The commission also said that it has not decided on when to hold the by-election.
