MP Abdulla Shahid has questioned the circumstances under which Mohamed Shareef, a known supporter of the government, was appointed to the Elections Commission.
Shahid expressed his sentiments over the matter through a post on his Twitter account, musing on its potential impact on the upcoming presidential elections.
Former SG of People's Alliance, the party founded by President Yaameen, and PPM candidate for the Thimarafushi constituency in 2014 Parliamentary elections, appointed to the Elections Commission. And we are to expect free and fair elections? #MaldivesCrisis #StateofEmergency

Shareef was appointed as the head of the Elections Commission through a vote on Tuesday, with 33 votes in favour.
Pro-government MP Nazim Rashad had defied the ruling party’s whip-line and was the sole member to vote against Shareef.
