The parliament committee has approved Ahmed Shareef, the MD of Fenaka Corporation, for membership at the Elections Commission (EC).

The committee on independent institutions approved Shareef on Monday, the same day it received the request.

President Abdulla Yameen nominated Shareef after one of the seats in EC became vacant after the resignation of its president Ahmed Suleiman, who is now the president of the National Integrity Commission (NIC).

Shareef had previously worked as the secretary general of EC and was also a member of President Abdulla Yameen’s party, the People’s Alliance (PA).

The transfer of Suleiman to NIC and appointment of Shareef to EC was rumored to have been planned.
