North Henveiru MP Abdulla Shahid and Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef have been released after being arrested at the anti-government protests for allegedly obstructing police duties.

They were released on Saturday after being kept in island prison Dhoonidhoo.

Police have also released others arrested at the protests including Mikael Naseem (leader of opposition MDP’s youth wing), Naeema Mohamed, Rifga Shiham, and Fathimath Nashwa.

MP Shahid, MP Latheef, and Jumhoree Party (JP)’s deputy leader Abdulla Riyaz were arrested at Friday’s protest. But police have refused to release Riyaz by claiming that he was arrested according to the State of Emergency laws.

Speaking to RaajjeTV after his release, Latheef denied allegations of obstructing police duties and said that he was unlawfully apprehended and questioned in Dhoonidhoo.

The opposition coalition has been holding a series of protests since the government declared a State of Emergency, during authorities are not required to give remand hearings for who they arrest.
