Council of the EU releases Dhivehi translation of decision on Maldives
The Council of the European Union late last month called on government officials to engage in 'genuine dialogue' with leaders of the opposition
The Council also condemned interference with the Supreme Court and actions taken against the judiciary and its judges
The Council said that “if the situation does not improve, the Council may therefore consider targeted measures”

The European Union (EU) has published its adoptions on Maldives in the country's native language, Dhivehi

The Council ofthr European Union late last month called on Maldives government officials to begin a genuine dialogue with leaders of the opposition.

“The Council calls upon Maldivian authorities to respect the rule of law, and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of expression and the right to fair trial,” adding that it condemned the “politically motivated arrests” and called for the immediate release of all political prisoners.

The Council also condemned “any interference with the work of the Supreme Court of the Maldives and actions taken against the judiciary and the judges”.

It also expressed concern over the possible impact the current situation could have on the “security of foreign residents and visitors, including tourists”.

Noting that the current situation in Maldives “is not in accordance with the principles of democratic rule and separation of powers,” the Council said that “if the situation does not improve, the Council may therefore consider targeted measures”.

It further called on the government “to engage with the leaders of the opposition in a genuine dialogue that paves the way for credible, transparent and inclusive Presidential elections,” adding that the EU “is ready to support UN facilitation of such a dialogue”.
