Government Overthrow Case
Police sends ex-President Gayoom's case for prosecution
Former President Gayoom, the Chief Justice, and Justice Ali Hameed are alleged to have conspired to overthrow the government
Police say they found evidence that Gayoom, as well as son Faris and son-in-law Nadheem bribed the Supreme Court justices
The justices were bribed into issuing order on Feb 1 to release political prisoners, claim President Yameen

The police service has confirmed that Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s case has been sent for prosecution.

Police on Twitter said that they have also sent the cases of Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, Justice Ali Hameed, and Judicial Administrator Hassan Saeed to the Prosecutor General (PG).

Police said Gayoom, Chief Justice Saeed, and Justice Hameed are alleged to have destroyed evidence, while administrator Saeed is alleged to have gone into hiding after avoiding a police summons.

The former president was arrested at his home right after the government declared the ongoing State of Emergency on February 5, and the two justices were arrested at the Supreme Court.

The State of the Emergency was declared after the Supreme Court on February 1 ordered the release of nine political prisoners and reinstate 12 opposition MPs.

President Abdulla Yameen has refused to obey the court order, and has accused the detainees of conspiring to overthrow the government.

Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan has said they have gathered evidence which showed that Gayoom, his son MP Faris Maumoon, and son-in-law Mohamed Nadheem had bribed the Supreme Court justices.
