Former police commissioner Ahmed Areef’s passport has been confiscated.

Areef was dismissed recently, for attempting to release political prisoners following the Supreme Court ruling on February 1.

RaajjeMV understands that Areef's passport has been withheld since his dismissal.

He was apparently fired for failing to pick up President Abdulla Yameen’s phone calls right after the Supreme Court issued the order to release the political prisoners. But Areef has told RaajjeMV that he was dismissed for trying to implement the order.

After Areef’s sacking, he was replaced by his deputy Ahmed Saudee, who was dismissed a day later. The police service is now being run by deputy commissioner Abdull Nawaz.

A total of three police chiefs have so far been sacked during President Yameen’s administration.
