Problematic matters within the Maldivian judiciary is unlikely to improve, says local lawyer Mahfooz Saeed.

Mahfooz said at a show on Raajje Television that the local judiciary urgently requires reform, and that this is impossible until a proper system of checks and balances are in place.

He also said that the democratic principle of separating powers has become eroded in the country, and that too needs to be resolved.

Mahfooz had in October last year spoken out against the Supreme Court’s failure to establish trial procedures, as per the Criminal Procedures Act.

He said that entirety of the Supreme Court bench is liable for penalty and that a disciplinary case against them is appropriate.

While the Supreme Court was mandated to draft trial regulations, the law mandated the police with determining regulations on conducting investigations.
