Opposition lawmaker Imthiyaz Fahmy has filed with the police against online news website Vaguthu, claiming that they published a report encouraging threats to his life.
The parliamentarian has also filed cases with the Maldives Media Council and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, over the matter.
Fahmy told RaajjeMV that Vaguthu published an article that misconstrues comments he had made, as a result of which some individuals have become frustrated to the point of threatening his life.
The article claims that the parliamentarian supports the idea of religious secularism and invited practitioners of Buddhism.
Fahmy had actually said, referring to a sense of injustice and lawlessness, that the political situation in the country is worse than Maldives’ ‘barbaric pre-Islamic’ years.
His case against the publication claims that Vaguthu, which is reportedly funded by the government and publications generally reflect ideology supported by the incumbent administration, that did so deliberately to slander him.
