PG is a bar to justice, cannot even offer a defense: Defense for MP Faris
Prosecutor General’s actions are a bar to fair trial
Details mandated under law not in charges
Details of alleged bribery attempt not mentioned in charges

Lawyers for Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon says that actions of the Prosecutor General were a bar to justice and that they were not even able to properly offer a defense.

In a press conference held in Endherimaage, after Wednesday’s hearing, lawyer Maumoon Hameed said that the actions of the PG were itself a bar to the charges raised on MP Faris. As such, he said that MP Faris’ right to a fair trial was in danger. He added that it was clear that charges on MP Faris was fabricated and that charges were raised in the absence of a proper investigation. Maumoon said the arrest of MP Faris was carried out after altering the laws.

Maumoon said the charges did not reveal any details of the charges, even though they are mandated by law. As such, the charges did not say when, where, which date on which MP Faris allegedly offered the bribe. A lack of details, such as that, he said was a bar to preparing a proper defense.

He said a lack of details in the charges meant that PG had the liberty to create any argument. This, he noted, posed issues for the defense as it meant that they have to prepare defense for an infinite number of arguments, which was a challenging feat.

Lawyer Ibrahim Shameel added that the defense had submitted 21 motions, with an additional three submitted on Wednesday. Stating that the case must be thrown out of Court, he said one of the motions was to that effect.
