Charges of bribery, identity fraud raised on MP Faris
Detained for duration of investigation, trial
Case will be filed sometime next week

Defense for Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon says that they will be submitting the case of the Parliamentarian to the United Nation’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD).

MP Faris’ lawyer, Maumoon Hameed had confirmed the news to RaajjeMV and will be filed sometime next week.

MP Faris was arrested on July 18th on allegations of bribery. Criminal Court detained him the next day, for the duration of investigation and trial on the allegations.

At the time of arrest, the investigation was still ongoing. Charges were raised on August 20th; one whole month following the arrest.

The defense filed the arrest warrant and detention verdict for appeal. Five months had lapsed since then, with the Court failing to arrive at a decision.

The charges on the MP says that he was complicit in offering bribes to fellow Parliamentarians in connection to the no confidence motion on Parliament Speaker Abdullah Maseeh.

An additional individual was arrested in connection to the charges. Ahmed Shafiu, an activist of Jumhooree Party (JP), was later on released, with the state ruling that the evidence provided was not sufficient to prove the charges of bribery.

Shafiu, later on in an exclusive to RaajjeMV, vouched for MP Faris’ innocence, adding that no cash had exchanged hands over the course of the no confidence motions.
