Ministry yet to handover flats in Addu City, fish factory yet to open
It has been two and a half years since the 264 residential flats in Addu City’s Hithadhoo and the 48 flats in Hulhumeedhoo were built
Hithadhoo power station’s capacity needs to be increased to provide electricity to the flats
Government was unable to open MIFCO fish factory at their scheduled date

The Addu City flats and fish processing factory remain closed at the end of 2017.

It has been two and a half years since the 264 residential flats in Addu City’s Hithadhoo and the 48 flats in Hulhumeedhoo were built.

The Housing Ministry accepted numerous applicants starting in May, and has at different times said it would announce the winners.

The Ministry has reportedly delayed giving out the flats over issues in the sewerage and electrical systems. Hithadhoo power station’s capacity needs to be increased to provide electricity to the flats, but there has been no fix this year.

MIFCO has also failed to open its fish factory in Hulhumeedhoo this year.

The government first announced plans to establish the factory at a ceremony attended by President Abdulla Yameen in Addu in 2014. The foundation was laid in 2016, and it was announced that the factory would open in late 2017.

MIFCO has said that the US $7m project would have a cold-storage capacity of 1,500 tons, and would be able to freeze 100 tons of fish daily. It would also be able to store 50 tons of ice, 200 tons of oil, and 520 tons of water.
