When the poll was opened, supporters of Nasheed and Yameen furiously campaigned on social media to gather votes.
Citizens, politicians, government officials, and activists had retweeted the poll after casting their own votes.
The poll is notable for gathering the most votes in a 24-hour window out of any Twitter poll in Maldives so far. It has also received 223 comments, 359 retweets, and 259 likes.
After Nasheed was declared the winner, MDP Spokesperson and North-Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy said it was clear that President Yameen would lose in any poll.
