President Abdullah Yameen says the airport to be developed in Maafaru island in Noonu Atoll was given to the UAE, due to the close relations between him and the royal family of UAE.

Speaking in the ceremony to open the port for Velidhoo island in Noonu Atoll, President Yameen indicated of the close ties between him and the royal family. He said the royal family had requested for a meeting during their visit to the Maldives. President Yameen said he had met the family on an informal basis, adding that the family prioritized on personal guarantees than written agreements.

He said these families had previously visited the Maldives but had never met senior Government officials.

President’s statements were mocked on social media, some who had accused him of nepotism and abuse of position in this case.

Maafaru airport had exchanged hands twice before being given to the UAE party. First it was given to Hamid Ismail, then to Ahmed ‘Sun’ Siyam, leader of Government coalition partner.
