The police service has said they are not investigating the alleged death threats to Former President Mohamed Nasheed, as no case has been filed.

On previous occasions, police had taken it upon themselves to investigate death threats to dignitaries.

An officer was recently investigated and charged over making online statements that allegedly encouraged the assassination of President Abdulla Yameen.

Nasheed, the self-exiled leader of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has received death threats from Twitter accounts.

User Abdulla Uzair Ahmed tweeted that he would “slaughter” Nasheed and “cut him to pieces”, while user Mohamed Miuzam vowed to find and kill him.

The two tweets, sent on Thursday, both stated that Nasheed would be killed if India “does anything” to Maldives. This is in regards to recent tensions between the two countries.

There has been growing calls on social media to investigate these death threats, which has led to Nasheed cancelling his meeting with Maldivians in Sri Lanka.
