An inmate at Asseyri jail has passed away.

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) reported that the deceased is Ibrahim Musthaq (31) of Havaasaa in Hithadhoo island in Seenu Atoll.

MCS added that he had passed away shortly after transfer to Hinmafushi Health Center following complaints of chest pains. MCS said they were alerted to the chest pains by another inmate just after sunrise and Musthaq was shown to the doctor at jail, who had recommended transfer to Health Center.

Quoting doctors at the Health Center, MCS said Musthaq had passed away due to a heart attack.

At the time of death, the inmate was serving a three-year, six-month jail term on theft charges. He was sentenced on April 2016.
