Housing Ministry nullifies announcement to develop Friday mosque area
No reason given for nullification
Announcement made on Sunday
Concerns over heritage sites sparked after announcement

Housing Ministry has nullified the announcement made on Sunday, calling for prospective contractors to develop Friday mosque area.

The nullification announcement came amid social media backlash over the Government’s plans to develop the area.

The previous announcement said the Ministry was looking for contractors to develop and landscape part of plot number 114. Friday mosque is part of plot number 114. The announcement also said contractors will have a period of 20 years to develop and run the area.

Friday mosque is on the tentative list of UNESCO heritage sites. In the past years, work was carried out to ensure that the mosque was placed on the official list.

The mosque was created in 1658 under the reign of King Iskandhar. Major renovations were carried out during the reign of Mohamed Shamsuddin.
