Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) raises alarms over the human rights issues facing Parliamentarians in four nations, including that of the Maldives.

A statement released by the Union after the 137th Assembly, stated that they had grave concerns over the restriction of rights of Parliamentarians and trials run against them. IPU further noted that authorities had stripped seven MPs of their Parliament seats without any legal grounds.

The statement also expressed concern over the entry of security forces into Parliament premises and effectively hijacked Parliament.

IPU had advised Maldives to visit Parliaments and Committees on Human Rights to understand and learn of issue of human rights of Parliamentarians.

The IPU statement came days after pro-government aligned MPs met IPU President and Secretary General of IPU. Only the ruling PPM and Government aligned MDA had attended the Assembly.
