The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has, of its own volition, begun investigating the death of Abdul Rasheed, an activist who died while serving a jail sentence.

HRCM president, Aiminath Easa, said that they are investigating allegations that surfaced on social networking platforms and in the media that Abdul Rasheed’s death was caused by the negligence of the Maldives Correctional Services.

The 51-year-old serving a jail term for assault during the ‘May Day’ protest passed away on October 10th.

Abdul Rasheed Mohamed was taken to the hospital for an unexpected ailment and had been receiving treatment at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital when he died.

An official from the Maldives Correctional Services said that doctors pronounced Abdul Rasheed dead at about 10:30 am.

Abdul Rasheed would have finished carrying out his sentence on February 18th, 2018.

The ‘May Day’ protest was a mass opposition rally held following the conviction of former president Mohamed Nasheed.
