Court silent on RaajjeTV request to broadcast trials of national interest

One month had lapsed since RaajjeTV sent in request

Criminal Court is yet to answer the letter sent in by RaajjeTV a month back, over the request to broadcast trials of cases pertinent to national interest.

RaajjeTV had sent in a letter to Judge Adam Arif, currently in charge of administering Criminal Court, on September 14th. The letter had requested for access to trials, especially given that all hearings in Courts have to be open to public. Therefore, the station had requested Court to grant access to cases, especially ones that are in public interest.

The letter had noted while it was the judiciary’s responsibility to establish justice, it was in the best interests of the nation to see that justice was being established. This, RaajjeTV noted will allay the concerns public had over the status and independence of judiciary.

RaajjeTV said that trials on the perpetrators of the November 3,1988 terrorist attacks were broadcast live. Noting that the Constitution that was being acted on then did not grant the same rights and privileges as the current Constitution, RaajjeTV added that this was in the best interests of the nation.

RaajjeTV had requested to broadcast the trial on murderer of Yameen Rasheed and trial of Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon on bribery charges.

However, a month had lapsed since the letter was sent and all attempts made by the station to that effect had been unsuccessful.
