The late Abdul Rasheed; his death while under care of MCS
Former President and elected leader of ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called on authorities to investigate the death of a senior citizen in prison.
Abdul Rasheed had passed away on Tuesday. He was one of the May Day protesters jailed. Abdul Rasheed was serving a five-year sentence.
In his tweet President Maumoon said that he was ‘deeply concerned by death of elderly prison inmate under care of Corrections’ and called on authorities to carry out a full inquiry.
He had attached a picture of the late Abdul Rasheed with the tweet.
Abdul Rasheed Mohamed was taken to the hospital for an unexpected ailment on Monday.
An official from the Maldives Correctional Services said that doctors pronounced Abdul Rasheed dead at about 10:30 am.
Abdul Rasheed would have finished carrying out his sentence on February 18th, 2018.
The ‘May Day’ protest was a mass opposition rally held following the conviction of former president Mohamed Nasheed.
