Raajje Television will appeal the Maldives Broadcasting Commission’s decision to fine the station, its Chief Operating Officer has said.

Hussein Fiyaz Moosa said in an interview that the commission’s fine has no legal basis and that the station would file an appeal in court within the next 30 days.

The commission fined Raajje Television on the basis that it had broadcasted content that incited violence and was a threat to national security.

In a statement following the decision, the station had condemned the MVR 500,000 fine and challenged the commission by saying that it was not within their mandate to decide on matters to do with national security.

The content in question is a speech given by opposition parliamentarian MP Mohamed Musthafa on July 28th.
