Opposition cancels Friday’s rally
Cancelled as Govt. had not responded to requests
No agency had responded to letters sent
Same behavior observed in UN vote

The opposition parties have canceled Friday’s planned rally. Friday’s rally was to be held in carnival area and was in solidarity with Rohingya Muslims.

The cancellation was announced in a press conference held in Maafannu Kunooz by Maduvvari constituency MP Mohamed Ameeth.

MP Ameeth said due to the changes in peaceful assembly act, such rallies can only be held in carnival area. He added that the opposition had sent in letters to relevant authorities to secure the area; all are yet to be answered.

MP Ameeth said they had requested Housing Ministry requesting to clear the area and facilitate arrangements for the area but no response had been given. He added they had requested for the area from 10am onwards.

While the public do not have to seek permits for assembly, MP Ameeth noted there were no areas designated for such assembly.

The Parliamentarian assured the Rohingya rally was not a political one. However, he said the Government had acted the same way they had done so in the vote taken in UN.
