Family of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has expressed concern over the state’s refusal to grant cancer screening to Adeeb.

The former Vice President was advised to undergo cancer screening a year back.

Adeeb’s wife, Maryam Nashwa made her sentiments known in a series of tweets posted while the state insurance corporation Aasandha was holding a press conference over their services.

Following the corporation’s revelation that most of the expenses were on cancers, Nashwa questioned on why her spouse was denied the right to treatment.

Noting that it had been a year since Adeeb was recommended to undergo cancer screening, Nashwa question whether it was being delayed purposely.

Genetics play a critical role in cancer diagnosis. Adeeb’s brother Mohamed Nadeem had passed away in 2008, after an untreated cyst turned cancerous.

Adeeb had a cyst in the same area, as confirmed by Nashwa. The family had been advocating to grant him medical leave, since the cyst was discovered. While the family and lawyers had been arguing for medical leave, arguing that his health was in imminent danger, referring to the cysts, glaucoma and kidney stones.

However, the Government had refused to grant medical leave, citing that if VP Adeeb was a flight risk.

The former Vice President was arrested on October 24, 2015 following allegations that he had a key role in the assassination attempt on President Abdullah Yameen by way of exploding the Presidential speedboat. He had been held in solitary confinement since then.

A 33-year jail verdict had been announced on Adeeb in connection to three cases. An additional two charges are still on trial, with the Prosecution raising nine more cases against Adeeb.
