Residents of Maaroshi island of Shaviyani Atoll have begun protesting after they were brought a used electricity generator.

The island has reportedly been experiencing sporadic power outages and the generator was provided by the state-operated utilities company Fenaka Corporation as a temporary measure.

The island is currently being powered by two eighty kilowatt generators, which is logistically daunting to handle as they need to be active to supply the entire island. Tasks such as changing oils and maintenance would result in power outage.

Fenaka’s Managing Director Ahmed Shareef said that the generator sent to the island has no faults and that it is only a temporary solution, until the reason for the power outages is dealt with.

A similar incident, where residents of Lhohi island in Noonu Atoll began protesting after the state failed to provide an electricity generator promised to them.
