The police have yet to conclude its investigation into the stabbing of Mahfooz Saeed, who was attacked and hospitalized two years ago.

Mahfooz, a lawyer working closely with the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, was stabbed in the temple on Maaveyo Magu of capital city Malé, when he was reportedly visiting his mother.

A team of four doctors had operated on him after the stabbing at the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. This was a three-hour surgery.

In a statement following his recovery, Mahfooz said that he had not received any threats prior to the attack and that he does not believe the stabbing had anything to do with a personal matter or a case he had been working on at the time.

While Mahfooz had called on authorities to expedite their investigation, the government had then expressed concern over the violence.

President Abdulla Yameen, who had concluded a symposium to mark the anniversary of him attaining office, had said that he ‘disconcerted’ to see violent attacks being carried out over political or social rhetoric.

Then Home Minister Umar Naseer had also made a post on his official twitter account, condemning the act.

Police are still looking for Shafraz Ibrahim, the second suspect they believe was actively involved in the attack. They have arrested and are detaining the second, Ahmed Raaidh.
