The incumbent administration has signed an agreement with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to commence the government’s taxi service in the Greater Malé Region (GMR) at a time Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen in December 2024 confirmed that there were no cars scheduled to be brought to begin the taxi service.

In response to questions submitted to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation by a private individual under RTI on 11 December 2024, the ministry said that no cars have been brought for this service so far, and no orders have been placed for cars up to that point.

When inquired about how the expenses for this would be arranged, the answer was “no specific arrangement has been made yet."

Further, it was highlighted that neither government budget nor foreign aid has been arranged for the commencement of the service.

At the ceremony held on Wednesday to assign MTCC to operate a taxi line in GMR under the name of EV Taxi Service, the government said that this service, which includes 100 percent electric vehicles, is a round-the clock service that will provide solutions to all the problems currently facing the public in obtaining taxi services in the capital region.

At Wednesday's ceremony, images of the taxi cars being introduced by the government were also shown.
