2 January 2025 has been declared a government holiday.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu declared January 2, which falls on a Thursday, as a government holiday on Monday.
The president’s decision was announced in a statement released by the President's Office on Monday.
The day was declared a holiday because the first day of the Gregorian New Year is already a government holiday, and according to the calendar, 1 January 2025 falls on a Wednesday.
As the following day, Thursday, 2 January 2025, would be a working day, the president decided to make it a holiday to ensure a continuous holiday period for employees without interruption.
