Discussions have been held on strengthening the ties between Maldives and China.
The discussions were held between Vice Chairman of the 14th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Bater and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Bater called on President Muizzu at the President’s Office on Thursday.
Shedding light on the cordial relationship enjoyed between the two countries, Muizzu emphasized his visit to China in early 2024 and extended gratitude for giving him the opportunity.
Discussions also revolved around key development initiatives including the China – Maldives Friendship Bridge as well as ways to strengthen the friendly relations.
Conveying warm greetings on behalf of President of China Xi Jinping, Bater congratulated Muizzu on winning super majority in this year’s parliamentary elections.
Further, he touched upon the historic relations between Maldives and China and stated that the government of China respects and support the sovereignty of Maldives, while promoting mutual respect and enhancing cooperation.
Highlighting that the 2014 State Visit to Maldives by President Xi Jinping and the Maldivian leader’s recent visit, the Vice Chairman stated that these visits contributed to the progression of cooperation and friendly relations between Maldives and China.
Before concluding the meeting, Muizzu and the Vice Chairman expressed mutual keenness to work together to continue collaborating in the future.
Vice Chairman Bater arrived in the Maldives on a brief official visit on Tuesday and was received warmly by Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis Ahmed Nazim.
As part of the visit, he earlier sat down for talks with Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla and Deputy Speaker Nazim as well.
Before leaving the island nation, he also met other senior government officials.
