A foreign man who was arrested over allegations of attempting to smuggle drugs, has been remanded.
The Criminal Court ordered his remand, following a request by the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
The court order reveals that accused in connection with drug smuggling attempt is a Nigerian man, 34.
He has been charged with drug possession, peddling and abuse.
The court ordered for him to be remanded at a custodial prison, for 15 days.
The reasons cited for his remand were that sufficient evidence has been presented against him, and that investigation statements and snapshots from the CCTV footage were submitted as well.
It has been revealed that he was arrested, as per the procedure set for it.
As he is currently admitted at the Dhoonidhoo Custodial Clinic, he was remanded in judicial custody as per Section 5 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, relating to trial.
Once authorities are able to present him before court, he must be presented at the earlier for his remand to be renewed.
The Criminal Court has also instructed authorities to present him before court within a maximum period of 24 hours for his remand, as soon as he is discharged from the clinic.
MPS has also submitted medical documents to prove that the man had attempted to smuggle drugs into the Maldives, by ingesting them.
