Remand of drug suspect
Man accused of drug trafficking, remanded
The intel report revealed that his apartment was used for drug peddling
The suspect is a 29-year-old Maldivian man
He was remanded for 15 days

A man has been arrested and remanded for alleged drug possession and peddling.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) sought his remand from the Criminal Court, upon which the court issued an order to remand the 29-year-old Maldivian man.

Hamdhoon Ahmed was given 15 days in remand, at a custodial jail.

The Criminal Court order states that there is enough evidence to prove the allegations made against Hamdhoon.

The order goes on to read that the police statements filed, the drug investigation report and the photo report submitted in the case indicate that a large quantity of drugs was recovered from an apartment believed to be linked to the suspect.

As a reason for his remand, the court revealed that he was remanded for the safety and security of the public, and as he was deemed a possible danger to the society, in accordance with Article 49 of the Maldives Constitution, and Sections 59 and 60 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The reason cited for the fact that there was a need for his custodial remand is that a large quantity of narcotics was confiscated from an apartment linked to him, as it was found that the apartment where he was living in was used for drug possession and peddling as per the police intelligence report, as equipment used to peddle drugs were found inside the apartment, as he was suspected to be involved in drug trade and as they believe if such a person is released into the society, there could be a threat to the safety and security of the public.
