Council members of Naalaafushi island of Meemu atoll have urged the administration to fast-track the harbor upgrade project.
This was done during a meeting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held with the island’s council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) members on Wednesday.
The most pertinent needs and concerns facing the island community were discussed at the meeting including the need to fast-track the completion of the causeway, expediting water supply and sewerage projects, fast-tracking the development of the island’s new harbor as well as the prompt resumption of the halted construction project for the island’s school.
Councilors further raised concerns regarding the lack of space at the council secretariat as well as challenges due to an inadequate waste management system.
Shedding light on the need to develop sports and fishing on the island, the councilors shared the essential requirements for enhancing the provision of healthcare services in the island.
The meeting also saw WDC members sharing challenges they face due to the lack of a dedicated workspace for them.
They went on to request the government to provide an allowance of no less than MVR 5,000 to WDC members.
Listening to these concerns, the president assured that his administration was currently working to compile a plan to build a new council office on the island.
Noting that his administration will address the issues raised by the council and seek solutions to tackle them, through consultations with relevant authorities.
