Council members of Vaadhoo island in Gaaf Dhaal atoll, have urged the government to prioritize the island’s economic progress.

This was done during a meeting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held with the island’s council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC), as part of his tour of some islands in the south of Maldives which he began on Sunday morning.

During the meeting held at the Secretariat of Faresmaathoda Council, councilors briefed the president on several issues facing the island residents, including the need to improve employment opportunities and the overall economic situation of the island.

Faresmaathoda councilors shed light on the need for more port space and the concerning condition of roads and difficulty in using them due to potholes.

They further expressed concerns regarding some development projects that have been halted, and highlighted the importance of addressing these issues for the economic and social development of the island.

The meeting also saw WDC members highlighting the need of designating a special office for them.

They also urged the government to establish a swimming track, an outdoor gym, and housing units for the island community.

Listening to these concerns, the president stated that he prioritizes the utilization of the island’s resources to boost its economy.

Noting that promoting agriculture and ensuring food security in the country were top priorities for his administration, Muizzu revealed that efforts will be made to attract agriculture-related investments to the island.

Further, Muizzu pledged to initiated the projects that have been halted on the island, and to prioritize the issues raised by the council.
