President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced an ambitious vision for the sustainable development of Maldives.

The president announced his vision for the future of Maldives, while delivering his address at the World Governments Summit 2024 on Tuesday.

The Maldivian leader attended the World Governments Summit 2024 and delivered his address, as part of his ongoing official trip to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), upon the official invitation of Vice-President, Prime Minister and Minister for Defence of UAE, Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The summit was convened at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai.

It was held from February 12 – 14.

In his opening remarks, President Muizzu praised the leadership and government of the middle-eastern nation for leading the path to promote inclusive, strong leadership, governance and partnership.

Shedding light on his vision to achieve sustainable development in the economic sectors under the Visitor Economy Concept, the president noted some of the development projects including the central maritime port with a free zone, expansion of the Velana International Airport (VIA) as well as the integration of maritime development in the northernmost atoll of Maldives, with a global shipping route.

Going on to touch upon his administration’s commitment to integrate technology and artificial intelligence to drive productivity and foster business growth, the Maldivian leader reiterated key manifesto pledges.

Some of these pledges include promoting paperless e-government platforms and leveraging Artificial Intelligence in several services.

Alongside economic development, Muizzu reiterated the commitment of the Maldivian government to environmental sustainability.

He also shed light on the recent commencement of the Ras Malé Eco-City project.

The Ras Malé Eco-City project carries the purpose of improving urban living by providing 65,000 housing units and setting new sustainability standards.

Muizzu revealed his plans to develop urban centers throughout the country and went on to speak regarding the vulnerable environment of the small island nation.

As such, he stressed the urgency of taking swift global action to address the climate crisis.

The president also highlighted some of his administration’s goals including to increase renewable energy to 33 percent, establish more biosphere reserves and nature parks, plant five million trees for resilience, explore vertical farming for food security, prioritize climate resilience as well as implement a 20-year development plan.

In conclusion, the Maldivian president shed light on the significance of international cooperation for sustainable development.

He also pledged to collaborate and share knowledge with other governments and declared that Maldives looks forward to forge partnerships with other governments and celebrate mutual success as well as priorities.

Themed ‘Shaping Future Governments', the World Governments Summit has welcomed governments, international organizations, thought leaders, and private sector leaders this year, where discussions are taking place on future challenges and empowering the next generation of governments.
