The council of Guraidhoo island in Thaa atoll, has briefed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on the urgent needs of the island community.
This was done during a meeting the president held with the Guraidhoo council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) on Tuesday, as part of his ongoing three-day tour of Thaa atoll.
During the meeting held at the secretariat of the island council, Muizzu expressed delight in visiting Guraidhoo as his first trip to an island since assuming office.
Highlighting that the administration’s development initiatives follow the most urgent needs and requests of the island communities, Muizzu stated that the Guraidhoo Airport development project would commence within 2024, as requested by the island community.
The meeting saw councilors shedding light on the importance of the airport project, for the development of the island and went on to touch upon the need for health sector development.
They also raised concerns by the fishing community regarding the current rates and dues.
Further, the councilors shared the community’s need for road construction and the development of sports facilities for youth.
In addition to this, they stated that they require a school bus especially during the rainy season, due to the conditions of the road.
The issue of space constraints at the council secretariat and the need for easing the council's financial burden in light of budgetary constraints were also raised.
Listening to these concerns, the president assured the councilors that he would work to resolve their issues, in consultation with relevant authorities.
He also shed light on the policies established, during his first-ever presidential address delivered at the first sitting of this year’s first parliament session on Monday, for the development of the fisheries sector by the administration.
The president departed on the tour of islands in Thaa atoll, on Tuesday. During the three-day visit, Muizzu will be holding meetings with island residents, island councils and Women’s Development Committees (WDCs). As part of the visit, Muizzu will be holding discussions regarding relevant development concerns of island communities.
