Former ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Parliamentary Group has moved to oust President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The main opposition’s PG approved this decision during a meeting convened on Monday.
RaajjeMV understands that MDP, which holds a majority in the People’s Majlis, gathered enough signatures for the impeachment motion with the unanimous votes of all lawmakers present at the meeting.
Although the impeachment motion has been prepared, MDP is yet to file it.
According to Article 100(a) of the Maldives Constitution, the People’s Majlis may remove the president or the vice president from office through a resolution, only on the ground of direct violation of a tenet of Islam, the constitution or law, serious misconduct unsuited to the office of the president or vice president, or on account of inability to perform the responsibilities of office of president of vice president.
According to Article 100(b) of the Maldives Constitution, a resolution as provided for in Article (a), must be submitted to the People’s Majlis, under the hand of at least one third of the members, specifying the reasons.
Further, Article 100(c) reveals that the parliament can establish a committee to investigate the matters specified in the resolution calling for removal of the president or vice president.
As there are 80 lawmakers currently in the house, 53 votes are required to win the impeachment motion.
