President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that every citizen bears the responsibility of fostering mutual respect towards protecting the honor and dignity of others.
President Dr. Muizzu made the remarks while speaking at the official ceremony held to mark National Unity Day 2023.
Taking the podium at the ceremony held at Dharubaaruge, on Tuesday night, President Muizzu reflected on the enduring attributes of unity among Maldivians.
As such, the President voiced his aspiration for Maldivians to reclaim and reinforce the unity that has diminished over time.
President Dr. Muizzu expressed that he envisions the Maldives reestablishing and revitalizing the dwindling aspects of familial relationships, friendships, and fraternal connections, safeguarding honor and dignity while fostering enduring compassion and empathy.
Recalling these friendly gestures, the President reminisced about the communal practices of sharing clothes, feeding the neighbors, and sweeping the neighbor's outdoor space. He highlighted the restart of the halted education system and the loss of electricity, which the President described as concerted efforts through an Islamic and nationalistic approach.
The National Unity Day, observed annually on December 26, commemorates the unity and solidarity demonstrated by citizens following the catastrophic 2004 tsunami.
