Five pledges were delivered on behalf of the Maldivian government

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has delivered a statement of pledges on behalf of the government of Maldives, at the Pledging Tree session of the high-level event "Human Rights 75" held in Geneva.

The Maldivian vice president attended the event as part of his official visit to Geneva, Switzerland, to participate in the high-level event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Human Rights 75).

The high-level Human Rights 75 event was held from December 11 – 12.

Delivering his statement, VP Latheef made five pledges and reiterated the commitment of the incumbent government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, to enhance efforts in capacity building, to develop a culture of human rights in the Maldives.

The vice president also pledged to continue efforts to enhance the domestic normative framework, aligning it with international obligations, improving the island nation’s treaty reporting capabilities, and engaging positively with international human rights mechanisms, as a newly established government.

In addition to this, he pledged to encourage equal participation of women and girls in all aspects of political and public life.

VP Latheef went on to pledge to solidify efforts to improve the implementation of national child protection mechanisms and enable access to inclusive education.

As his fifth and final pledge, the Maldivian vice president pledged to enhance climate resilience to protect the Maldivian way of life and their future, as the human rights of Maldivians are closely linked to climate change.

Over 100 countries made pledges at the event, organised by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The pledges were delivered as part of a campaign to encourage meaningful actions by UN Member States.
