Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has met the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
The meeting was held on Monday as part of the Maldivian vice president’s official visit to Geneva, Switzerland, to participate in the high-level event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Human Rights 75).
The Human Rights 75 high-level event took place from December 11 – 12.
Speaking at the meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, VP Latheef reaffirmed the commitment of the government of Maldives, to enhance national mechanisms and government institutions at all levels to mainstream and uphold human rights.
In addition to this, he reiterated the commitment of the Maldivian government to engage with the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms constructively, as well as to contribute meaningfully to the treaty body strengthening process.
VP Latheef and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights went on to engage in discussions regarding multiple mutually beneficial multilateral issues.
They shed light on the significance of multilateralism in preserving peace, enhancing living standards, and promoting human rights.
VP Latheef particularly raised the issue of the fundamental rights of the people of Palestine and stressed the urgent need to ensure humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
