The three individuals arrested in connection with a case of gang violence in the Maldives congested capital, have been remanded.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) made the arrests on Thursday. Three individuals were arrested in connection with the assault, that took place near Cibo Restaurant in Henveiru ward of capital Malé City.

The gang violence was reported to authorities at around 05:03pm on Wednesday.

Arrested were Nashyan Ibrahim Sabaah, 24, Muizzu Ahmed Farooq, 22 and Mohamed Zayaan Ismail, 18.

The suspects were remanded by the Criminal Court on Thursday. Zayaan was remanded for a five-day period and Muizzu and Nashyan were remanded for a period of 10 days.

The court order, sought by the police institution, reveals that they are to be remanded in custodial jail. The reason cited for their remand was that there was sufficient evidence received against them, showing that the accused had committed the crime.

According to the incident report submitted in connection with the case, there is sufficient evidence against the three.

The court order stated that the detention was defined as a situation in view of Article 49 of the Constitution of Maldives and Section 59 and 60 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, as they are deemed a threat to the safety and security of the community.

The reason for the presence of a condition for remand was deemed that the provisions of Section 13(c) of the Code of Criminal Procedure and 3 and 4 of the Code of Criminal Procedure relating to trial are deemed to be complete.

Further, the court highlighted that police had produced enough evidence to prosecute Zayaan in the case as well. The police institution has been instructed to produce more evidence in the next hearing.

In addition to this, while Muizzu’s legal representative has pointed out that the procedure for his arrest was flawed, the order states that based on the documents and incident report, the arrest was made in accordance with the procedure followed by authorities.

It was also highlighted that Muizzu and Nashyan had such records in the past as well.

A video of the violence has been circulating on social media, which shows a large crowd of the public and police officers gathered at the scene at the time of the violence.
