First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has signed the ‘'Global Commitment to Zero Waste for the World, Our Common Home’ initiative led by First Lady of the Republic of Türkiye Emine Erdogan.
As part of the first couple’s ongoing official trip to Turkey, FL Sajidha met with the First Lady of Türkiye at the Presidential Palace in Ankara on Monday.
During the meeting, the Maldivian first lady expressed sincere gratitude for the warm welcome and hospitality accorded to her and the Maldivian delegation during the trip.
The two first ladies engaged in discussions regarding women empowerment, gender equality, capacity building, human resources as well as climate change.
Further, the Maldivian first lady signed the global initiative led by the Turkish first lady titled 'Global Commitment to Zero Waste for the World, Our Common Home'. The initiative received the United Nations General Assembly resolution last year.
The initiative was opened for global signatures during the UNGA in September this year.
Shedding light on the need to promote efficient use and reuse of exhaustible resources and reduce waste generation through recycling to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the declaration urges UN Member States, civil societies, the private sector as well as the media to adapt their strategies and approaches to accelerate the transition to a circular economy and reduce the impact of waste on climate change.
On the sidelines of the visit, FL Sajidha also attended a one-on-one dinner hosted by the First Lady of Türkiye.
The Maldivian first couple is undertaking an official visit to Turkey at the invitation of the President of Turkey. The first couple is accompanied by a high-level delegation of senior government officials.
