As many as 132 offenders have been listed in the registry of child sex offenders.
A digitalizedregistry of child sex offenderswas launched on Sunday. The registry’s status will be managed by the Child and Family Protection Service (CFPS).
The registry was digitalized and launched by Minister of Gender, Family and Social Service Aishath Mohamed Didi during a ceremony held on Sunday and it serves the purpose of updating and meeting the information that was entered manually, earlier.
The registry was formulated under the Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Offenders and is required to be published under Section 57 of the act.
Other than the location of the offenders listed in the registry, all other information will be publicized by the Child and Family Protection Service when provided by the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office) IT team.
The information provided by the PG Office will be based on the judgment or verdict of a court of law. The PG Office offered technical assistance to the gender ministry to update the list.
Digitizing the registry has made it possible for individuals to obtain information even using an ID card number that indicates the nationality of the offenders, filtered out to seven categories.
The list contains offenders of different ages, two of the oldest offenders being 88 years of age. 43 individuals in the list are above 50 years of age, 50 individuals between 35 – 49 years, and 38 offenders between the ages of 18 and 34.
In 2018, the first registry of child sex offenders containing details such as their names, the type of offense they committed, and the date of sentence completion was compiled.
However, the public went through issues in accessing the website, despite the registry being publicized.
Gender ministry revealed that the registry was digitized with the purpose of ensuring that the public has easy access to the information available on the registry.
The registry of child sex offenders has since been opened for public opinion.
The Child Protection Agency has revealed that many members of the general public have been seeking information regarding the digitalization of the registry of child sex offenders.
