Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted the candidacy form of their candidate for the upcoming presidential election to the Elections Commission.
MDP’s candidate for the 2023 Presidential Election is President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
President Solih’s candidacy form was submitted to the EC on Sunday.
MDP’s election agent, Mohamed Nashiz, handed over the form to the President of the EC, Fuad Thaufeeq.
President Solih’s running mate for the election is Member of Parliament for North Addu Hithadhoo constituency, Mohamed Aslam.
MDP made the announcement on Saturday.
Aslam is the leader of the MDP parliamentary group and the majority leader of the parliament. He has been working with the MDP since its inception.
Aslam has also worked with the President in the Parliament for many years.
President Solih has told reporters earlier that he would decide his running mate after much deliberation. He said he would seek the opinion of senior party leaders in the decision.
MDP has stated that the party wanted the President’s running mate for this year’s election to be one from the party.
The deadline for submitting candidacy forms for the presidential election will expire on Monday.
Applications for the Presidential Election shall be submitted to the Election Center. Applications will be accepted by the commission from Saturday through Thursday between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm and on Fridays between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, within the time frame specified.
EC notes that candidates must adhere to the criteria outlined in Article 109 of the Constitution and Article 7 of the Presidential Election Act
The requirements for a candidate for the position of Vice-President are the same as those for the President of the Maldives, as stated in Article 112(N) of the Constitution.
The election voting period is set to run from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm on 09th September.
The Commission has disclosed that a total of 604 ballot boxes will be stationed across the Maldives and abroad for the Presidential Election.
A total of 282,755 people are eligible to vote in the election.
