The Elections Commission of Maldives has received 40 complaints on the final voter’s list for the upcoming Presidential Elections.
EC revealed that among the complaints received by the commission include 28 complaints on the names of deceased persons being listed, nine complaints regarding a change of residential address, one complaint for missing a name in the list, one complaint with a change in the national identity card and one complaint with a change in constituency.
A total of 282,672 voters are presently eligible to cast their ballots in the September poll, including names that were deleted from the open list for voters' list complaints following administrative complaints filed by EC.
However, the commission has predicted more changes to be brought to the list after combing through the complaints submitted on the final voter’s list.
EC revealed that it is important for parties, candidates and individuals to verify whether their names are in the voters' list or if it is listed accurately.
Arrangements have been made for individuals to check the required information through sending an SMS or calling 1414. SMSs are to be sent to 1414, after entering VR (space) (ID number).
The list can also be accessed on the commission’s website, island councils as well as city councils.
Speaking regarding the preparations by the authority for the Presidential Election slated for September 9, Elections Commissioner Fuad Thaufeeq stated that day-to-day complaints are being monitored to prepare the final list as soon as possible when the deadline for filing complaints expires.
He added that once the final list is publicized, it cannot be altered after that, adding that it is important to check if one's name is in the list during this period and lodge a complaint if required.
